1. Cut toenails & remove calluses

Make sure that the toenails are kept short and filed preventing blood blisters forming under the nail, any callus formation on the skin should be removed by a podiatrist to prevent blisters forming underneath the callus (which are agonising) and also have the ability to stop you from completing your event.

2. Keep foot skin supple

Preparing the skin prior to an event is recommended as the skin needs to adapt to the stresses applied to it, so a prepared, supple, good quality skin will flex and resist the stress applied to it. Dry, cracked poor quality skin will not adapt well to the extreme conditions the feet are exposed to during an event.

The skin needs to be supple, soft and pliable so it resists the forces that are put upon it, then it can move and flex as the demand is put upon it. When the skin is wet or dry it fails to achieve that flexibility and resilience.

So, how do we manage both situations, dry during activity and hydrated as well?

Preparation is the key!

3. Exfoliate soles and heels

To keep the skin soft and smooth use a foot file to get rid of the flaky skin then use an exfoliant (foot Scrub) to smooth the skin and then apply an emollient (foot cream) to hydrate the skin.

4. Daily pedicure to avoid blisters

Use this foot care regime every day for a week and you will notice a huge difference in the texture and tone of the skin on your feet, it moves easier and is so smooth to the touch. The skin then has an increased resilience to the forces put upon it by pressure, friction therefore causing increased shear. This will be another factor in helping prevent the blister formation.
